Woman with a gun

for mother's day

She wanted me baptized a second time; as if once wasn’t enough. When the doctor asked, the nuns huddled around her with my mother. I didn’t know a polite way to say no.

“It’s ok if you don’t want to but you’ve been here so long, we thought you would want to do this with your mother.”

There were men in the back ground watching Dr. Lee as she said this. I suddenly felt like I owed them for the kindness they had shown me and the sympathy they had hidden. For a year now, I had been there on Friday nights, full moons, new moons, and Sunday afternoons when they served fake ham to the Mexicans who came for Bible study. I had sat with their children watching vhs movies of the king monkey and the man with the wine jug that could never be filled. I had spent the night and cried when my mother dropped me off only to come back three days later. Now I owed them.
